Ivar Viehe Naess (4.4.1870 i Aamodt i Østerdalen - 24.1.1959 i Chicago ) var sønn av Severin Olsen og Milla Iversdatter Viehe . Bror til arkitekten Sigurd E Viehe-Naess .

Ivar (døpenavn Iver) ble døpt i Osen kirke i Trysil prestegjeld. Familien bodde på Osneset i dagens Åmot kommune.

Gift 29.11.1899 i Chicago med Johanna Mathilde Rødde (8.2.1877 i Trondheim - 4.2.1967), datter av skomaker Thomas Nikolai Rødde og Lovise Marie Lorentsen. Barn: Mignon Viehe (8.9.1900- 2.7.1908), Ivar V. Naess (11.9.1914- 6.6.1990 i Lansdowne, Delaware, Pennsylvania).

Ivar Viehe Næss kom til Chicago i 1890, han gikk på kveldsskole der, lokal kunstskole og Armour Institute, før han returnerte til Europa i 1897 for å studere arkitektur i L`Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts i Paris.

Arkitekten D.H.Burnham fikk se noen av Viehe Næss sine arbeider i Chicago Trust and Savings bank, så i 1900 spurte han om Viehe Næss kunne begynne i hans firma. Der ble Viehe Næss inntil 1912 som sjefstegner for en rekke større banker og bygninger. I 1913 startet han egen praksis i Chicago som snart fikk en stor oppdragsmengde. Han tegnet the Home National Bank i Arkansas City, Kansas; The Norwegian-Lutheran Deaconess Hospital i Chicago; the Elmhurst Hospital; the South Chicago Savings Bank Building. I 1924 vant han gullmedalje for design og construksjon Chicagos beste bygning, the Standard Corporation on East Superior Street.

Han var arkitekt for Nordre Osen kirke som ble bygget i 1923.

Born in Nord-Osen in Oesterdalen, Norway in 1870, Viehe-Naess grew up in close proximity to church architecture. The parish church and school were located on the Naess farm. His mother’s brother was a prosperous builder in Oslo and, as a young man, he came to admire the prosperity of his uncle’s home and summer cottage. He heard of the plans for the great Columbian Exposition and decided to go to Chicago in 1891 in order, he said, “that I might be well acquainted with the place before the great celebration.”

In the fall of 1892, Viehe-Naess entered the Chicago School of Architecture. After three years of study he went to work as a draftsman and continued designing interiors until 1897, when he went to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1900, Viehe-Naess joined the firm of Daniel Burnham, where he remained until 1912. During that period he worked on several of Burnham’s larger projects, including the Flat Iron building in New York.

Viehe-Naess’s American churches are all in the same neo-gothic style as Unity. Among his other church designs were Buena Presbyterian, Rogers Park Presbyterian, North Austin Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church (Wilson at Spaulding). Other buildings designed by Viehe-Naess include the Lakeview and South Chicago Banks, the Lutheran Deaconess Home and Hospital and the Elmhurst Hospital.

Viehe Naess also had charge of the architectual planning under the direction of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White of the Chicago Civic Opera House.
