Norwegians in the American Civil War
Norwegians in the Civil War.
The American Civil War (CW) began on April 12, 1861 and many new immigrants joined the forces to fight this battle; many for the Union and a few on the Confederates side.
Company Rosters (http://www.nagcnl.org/civilwar/rosters/)
This page contains links to the official rosters of the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Some 906 men served in the 15th during its 3 year existence. All were volunteers. Over half died of wounds or disease, or were so physically crippled that the army gave them disability discharges. By the end of the 3 years only some 300 were still with the regiment. The rosters below will tell you who these men were, and a little bit about what happened to them.

"Schedules of Union Civil War veterans or their widows are reproduced in National Archives Microfilm Publication M123, Special Schedules of the Eleventh Census (1890) Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War (118 rolls). The schedules are arranged by state, then by county, and then by locality. Schedules survive for persons on U.S. Navy Vessels or in Navy Yards, Washington, DC, and the following states: Kentucky (part), Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Indian Territories, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming." [Source: https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1890/1890.html…] Note: sadly, Iowa was lost to the fire. • You can access these records on either Ancestry or FamilySearch.
As an example, I've provided an image of the 1890 Veterans Schedule for Liberty, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin. There are several Norwegian born men on this page, but to highlight a couple, here is what can be discovered:
Berge, Iver O • 32nd WI, Co, E • Sept 13, 1864 – June 17, 1865 (9 months, 2 days) • Wisconsin, Manitowoc, Liberty • ED 156, line 14 (is in poor health) • Iver was born in Vang, Oppland fylke and had immigrated in 1849. His brother Ole Berge can also be found on the page.
