Erling Riis

Erling Riis (12. mars 1889 i Kristiania - 19.4.1965 i Mobile, Alabama, USA) var sønn av kjøpmann Anton Otto Riis (1842 i Stange-) og Dorthea Antonette Mørch (1856 i Vaale-). Gift med Dorothy Young (7.9.1894 i Wisconsin - 20.9.1977).

Barn:

  • Erling Riis jr. (5.7.1927 i Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas - 20.3.2003 i Point Clear, Baldwin County, Alabama),
  • Dorothy Riis Bates (19.9.1924 i Bastrup, Louisiana - 20.10.2013).

Erling Riis ble utdannet fra Kristiania Tekniske Skole 1909. Deretter ansatt ved Torp søndre - A/S Torp bruk i Fredrikstad i 2 år. Utvandret til USA i 1911, og var her ansatt ved forskjellige selskaper innen treforedling inntil han ble ansatt ved Southern Kraft Corporation Panama Mill i Florida.

Obituray of daughter Dorothy Bates;

Dorothy Riis Bates "Dolly" age 89 of Mobile, AL passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Allen Memorial after an extended illness. She was born September 19, 1924 in Bastrop, LA to Erling Sr. and Dorothy Young Riis.

She graduated from Murphy High School, Stephens College, and the University of Alabama. Dolly was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was named Volunteer of the Year at the Rotary Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of the Junior League of Mobile and several Mystic Societies. Dolly was also a long-time member of All Saints Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Lucien Bates, Sr.; and her brother, Erling Riis, Jr. She is survived by her children, Rondi Bates Turner, Falls Church, VA; Marie Bates Curry, Mobile, AL; and George Lucien "Buddy" Bates, Jr. (Maggie), Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Dorothy Marie Curry, Lew Carter "Trip" Curry, III, George Lucien Bates, III (Michele), John Bevil Bates (Marjorie), Riis Bates Larsen (Chris), Gaines Toulmin Bates, and Kathrine Powers Bates "Khaki"; 12 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Semple Riis; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 31, 2013 at Pine Crest Funeral Home beginning at 1:00 pm followed by a graveside service in Pine Crest Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Pallbearers will be Lucien, John, Trip, Gaines, Buzzy, Jim, and Erling,III. The family would like to thank Allen Memorial and Gentiva Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Via Health Fitness and Enrichment Center, Allen Memorial Home, or the charity of your choice .
